More than 150 years before his birth, the prophet Isaiah foretold that a ruler named Cyrus would allow the Jewish people to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple.

“I say of Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd, and he shall accomplish all My purpose.’”

When Cyrus became king of Persia, he did indeed issue a decree allowing the Jewish exiles to return and rebuild Jerusalem.

The Bible also foretold the destruction of several great ancient powers.

The prophet Ezekiel, for example, predicted the fall of Tyre, one of the wealthiest cities of the ancient world. He declared that many nations would come against it, that its walls would be destroyed, and that its stones would be thrown into the sea.

“They shall throw your stones, your timber, and your soil into the midst of the water.”

Ezekiel 26:12

Centuries later, Alexander the Great used the ruins of the old city to build a causeway to the fortified island city of Tyre.

The dispersion and later restoration of the Jewish people is also considered one of the most remarkable prophecies in history.

The Bible foretold:

2) the preservation of the Jewish people throughout the centuries

3) their return to their land

4) the rebirth of Israel as a nation

Several centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ, the prophets foretold many details concerning His coming, His ministry, His death, and His resurrection.

These prophecies were written long before the events recorded in the New Testament.

One of the most famous concerns His birthplace.

The prophet Micah foretold about 700 years in advance that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah… out of you shall come forth the One who will rule Israel.”

Micah 5:2

The prophet Isaiah also foretold that a virgin would conceive and bear an extraordinary Son.

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive.”

Isaiah 7:14

But it is especially Isaiah chapter 53 that impresses many readers.

Written centuries before Jesus, this passage describes:

1) His rejection by men

2) His sufferings

3) His sacrifice for sins

4) His silence before His accusers

5) His unjust death

6) His ultimate victory

Psalm 22 also contains striking details that resemble the crucifixion:

1) pierced hands and feet

2) the mockery of the crowd

These texts were written centuries before the birth of Jesus and even before Roman crucifixion was practiced.

Jesus warned that these events would be like birth pains—at first spaced apart, then becoming more frequent and more intense.
