« Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. »
In this verse, Amos declares that God reveals His plans to His prophets before carrying out His major works. Before bringing judgment or accomplishing key events in His plan of redemption, God gives advance warning so that people may understand His purposes and have the opportunity to respond to Him.
This truth has been demonstrated throughout biblical history. God foretold through His prophets the coming of the Messiah, the destruction and restoration of Israel, and many of the events of the last days. Time and again, He revealed His plan before bringing it to pass.
This verse highlights the reliability of Bible prophecy. Because God knows the future perfectly, He can announce events centuries before they occur. The prophecies that have already been fulfilled give believers confidence that the remaining prophecies concerning the future will also be fulfilled exactly as God has declared.
« That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid. »
In this verse, God specifically names Cyrus, the future king of Persia, as the ruler He would use to accomplish His purpose. Isaiah foretells that Cyrus would order the rebuilding of Jerusalem and its Temple, even though the city had not yet been destroyed and Cyrus had not yet been born.
This prophecy was fulfilled in the sixth century B.C. About 150 years after Isaiah recorded it, Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon and issued a decree allowing the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple (Ezra 1:1-4), fulfilling this prophecy with remarkable accuracy.
This verse demonstrates God’s perfect knowledge of the future. By revealing Cyrus’s name and mission long before his birth, God displayed His sovereignty over the nations and confirmed that every promise He makes is fulfilled exactly as He declares.
« But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. »
In this verse, Micah foretells that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem Ephratah, a small town in Judah. He also reveals that this future Ruler has existed from everlasting, declaring the eternal and divine nature of Jesus Christ long before His birth.
This prophecy was fulfilled in the first century when Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, as recorded in Matthew 2:1 and Luke 2:4-7. More than 700 years before this event, Micah accurately foretold the exact place of the Messiah’s birth.
This verse demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah foretold by the prophets. By fulfilling this prophecy with such precision, God confirmed that Jesus is the promised King, who came to accomplish His plan of salvation and who will one day return to establish His eternal Kingdom.
So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
In this verse, Jesus teaches that believers will be able to recognize the nearness of His coming by observing the prophetic signs He has just described. Just as the budding of a fig tree announces that summer is near, these events will indicate that God’s prophetic plan is approaching its fulfillment.
Today, many believers recognize that many of these signs are already taking place. The rebirth of Israel, the increase in wars, famines, earthquakes, growing spiritual deception, widespread apostasy, and rising global instability all reflect the conditions Jesus described. While these signs do not reveal the exact day or hour of His coming, they strongly indicate that the fulfillment of end-time prophecy is drawing near.
This verse is a call to discern the times in which we live. Jesus encourages believers to view current world events through the lens of Scripture, remain spiritually alert, and live in hopeful expectation, knowing that His return and the fulfillment of Bible prophecy are drawing near.
