9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
In this verse, John clearly identifies the great dragon as Satan, also called the old serpent and the Devil. He is described as the one who deceives the whole world, revealing his role as God's enemy and the deceiver of humanity.
This verse describes the moment when Satan is cast out of heaven after his defeat against Michael the archangel and his angels. He loses his access to God's presence and is cast down to the earth together with the angels who followed him.
This event marks a major turning point in the events of the end times: knowing that his time is short, Satan acts with great wrath during the Great Tribulation, seeking to oppose God's plan and persecute those who remain faithful to Him.
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
In this passage, John describes a spiritual war in heaven between Michael the archangel and his angels and Satan with his angels. The dragon is defeated and loses his place in heaven.
Verse 9 clearly identifies the dragon: he is the old serpent, the Devil, and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world. After his defeat, Satan is cast down to the earth together with the angels who followed him.
This event marks a major turning point in the events of the end times. Satan, no longer having access to God's presence, acts with great wrath during the Great Tribulation, knowing that his time is limited. He then seeks to oppose God's plan and persecute those who remain faithful to Jesus.
13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
In this passage, Satan, after being cast down to the earth, pursues the woman, who represents Israel. His purpose is to destroy the people through whom God has fulfilled His promises.
The woman receives God's special protection. The “two wings of a great eagle” represent divine help that enables the Jews who have recognized Jesus as the Messiah and placed their faith in Him to flee into the wilderness, to the place prepared for them. They will be nourished and protected for a time, and times, and half a time, or three and a half years, corresponding to the Great Tribulation.
Satan then attempts to destroy them by sending a flood after them. But God intervenes directly: the earth swallows the water and prevents Satan from reaching them.
This scene shows that despite Satan's great wrath and his efforts to prevent God's plan from being fulfilled, God remains sovereign and protects those who have placed their faith in Jesus until His Return, in order to fulfill His promises to Israel.
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
In this passage, John describes the events that take place at the end of the Millennial Kingdom. After being bound for one thousand years, Satan is released for a short time and once again deceives the nations, referred to here as Gog and Magog, gathering them for one final rebellion against God.
The rebellious armies surround the people of God, but the revolt is immediately crushed when fire comes down from heaven and consumes them. No prolonged battle takes place, for God’s victory is instantaneous and complete.
This passage marks the final defeat of Satan. He is cast into the lake of fire, where the Antichrist and the False Prophet have already been thrown, and he will be punished there forever. Every rebellion against God comes to an end, preparing the way for the Great White Throne Judgment.
