« Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, »
In this verse, God commands Ezekiel to prophesy against Gog, the leader of a future coalition of nations that will invade Israel. Many Bible prophecy scholars associate Gog with a future ruler of Russia, primarily because Magog, Meshech, and Tubal are commonly linked to peoples who settled north of Israel. This interpretation is further supported by Ezekiel 38:6 and 38:15, which repeatedly state that the invading army will come from “the uttermost parts of the north” (or “the north parts” in the KJV). When a line is drawn directly north from Jerusalem, it reaches the territory of modern-day Russia. The coalition also includes Persia (modern-day Iran), Cush (generally identified with Ethiopia or Sudan), Put (Libya), Gomer, and the house of Togarmah.
This invasion will take place before the confirmation of the seven-year covenant foretold in Daniel 9:27 and before the Rapture of the Church. Gog will lead this coalition in an attack against the mountains of Israel, generally identified with the mountainous region of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), but God will supernaturally intervene and completely destroy the invading armies.
This verse introduces one of the major prophecies of the last days. Gog’s defeat will demonstrate God’s sovereignty, protect Israel, and prepare the way for the prophetic events that follow, including the confirmation of the seven-year covenant, the Rapture of the Church, and the Tribulation.
The Prophecy of Gog et Magog
In these chapters, God foretells that in the last days Gog, the leader of a vast coalition of nations including Magog, Meshech, Tubal, Persia (modern-day Iran), Cush (generally identified with Ethiopia or Sudan), Put (Libya), Gomer, and the house of Togarmah (Ezekiel 38:2–6), will launch an invasion of Israel. The attack will be directed against the mountains of Israel, generally identified with the mountainous region of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).
This prophecy has not yet been fulfilled. According to the prophetic chronology presented on this website, it will take place before the confirmation of the seven-year covenant described in Daniel 9:27 and before the Rapture of the Church. This invasion will be one of the first major events of the last days.
When this coalition attacks Israel, God will intervene directly by sending a great earthquake, confusion among the invading armies, pestilence, torrential rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone, completely destroying Gog’s forces (Ezekiel 38:19–22).
Following this victory, Israel will spend seven months burying the dead (Ezekiel 39:12) and seven years burning the weapons left behind by the invading armies (Ezekiel 39:9). Through this miraculous intervention, God will display His power, make His holiness known among the nations, and prepare the way for the prophetic events that follow, including the confirmation of the covenant, the Rapture of the Church, and the Tribulation.
Gog et Magog after the Millennium
In Revelation 20, John describes the events that will take place after the Millennial Kingdom of Jesus Christ on earth. After being bound for one thousand years, Satan is released for a short time. He then goes out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth and gathers them together for one final rebellion against God. John refers to these nations as “Gog and Magog,” whose number is described as “the sand of the sea.”
Unlike Ezekiel 38–39, where Gog is presented as the leader of a specific coalition of nations attacking Israel before the Tribulation, Gog and Magog in Revelation 20 appear to symbolically represent the rebellious nations of the world that Satan gathers at the end of the Millennium. Revelation no longer describes a single political leader named Gog, but rather a worldwide rebellion inspired by Satan himself.
These armies march across the earth and surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city, which is commonly understood to be Jerusalem. However, unlike previous conflicts, no actual battle takes place. Fire comes down from God out of heaven and immediately devours the rebels, bringing their rebellion to a sudden and final end.
Following this final revolt, Satan is cast into the Lake of Fire, where the Beast and the False Prophet have already been since the glorious return of Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:20). There he will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
These events bring all opposition to God to its final conclusion. They are followed by the Last Judgment, when all the dead stand before God to be judged, and then by the creation of the New Heaven and New Earth, where God will dwell with His people forever.
The Gog and Magog of Revelation 20 are not the same as the Gog and Magog described in Ezekiel 38–39. The first conflict takes place before the Tribulation and involves a coalition of nations led by Gog attacking Israel, while the second occurs after the Millennium and describes the final rebellion of the nations deceived by Satan. Although the same names are used, these two prophecies refer to two distinct events separated by more than one thousand years in the biblical timeline.
« After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. »
In this verse, God announces that Gog, leading a coalition of nations including Magog, Meshech, Tubal, Persia (modern-day Iran), Cush (generally identified with Ethiopia or Sudan), Put (Libya), Gomer, and the house of Togarmah (Ezekiel 38:2–6), will launch an invasion of Israel in the last days.
The attack will be directed against the mountains of Israel, generally identified with the mountainous region of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). It is in this area that Gog’s armies will advance, expecting to overwhelm Israel.

22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.
In these verses, God declares that He Himself will intervene to destroy the armies of Gog. Without the help of any human army, He will send supernatural judgments, including pestilence, bloodshed, torrential rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone, bringing the invading coalition to complete destruction.
This event will take place before the confirmation of the seven-year covenant foretold in Daniel 9:27 and before the Rapture of the Church. By miraculously destroying Gog’s armies, God will demonstrate His power not only to Israel but also to all the nations of the world.
These verses reveal that God’s purpose extends far beyond protecting Israel. Through this miraculous victory, He will display His greatness, holiness, and sovereignty so that the nations will recognize that He alone is the LORD. This dramatic intervention will prepare the way for the prophetic events that follow in the last days.
