« Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, »
In this verse, God commands Ezekiel to prophesy against Gog, the leader of a future coalition of nations that will invade Israel. Many Bible prophecy scholars associate Gog with a future ruler of Russia, primarily because Magog, Meshech, and Tubal are commonly linked to peoples who settled north of Israel. This interpretation is further supported by Ezekiel 38:6 and 38:15, which repeatedly state that the invading army will come from “the uttermost parts of the north” (or “the north parts” in the KJV). When a line is drawn directly north from Jerusalem, it reaches the territory of modern-day Russia. The coalition also includes Persia (modern-day Iran), Cush (generally identified with Ethiopia or Sudan), Put (Libya), Gomer, and the house of Togarmah.
This invasion will take place before the confirmation of the seven-year covenant foretold in Daniel 9:27 and before the Rapture of the Church. Gog will lead this coalition in an attack against the mountains of Israel, generally identified with the mountainous region of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), but God will supernaturally intervene and completely destroy the invading armies.
This verse introduces one of the major prophecies of the last days. Gog’s defeat will demonstrate God’s sovereignty, protect Israel, and prepare the way for the prophetic events that follow, including the confirmation of the seven-year covenant, the Rapture of the Church, and the Tribulation.
5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.
In these verses, God identifies the nations that will form the coalition led by Gog against Israel. Persia corresponds to modern-day Iran. Ethiopia (Hebrew: Cush) is generally identified with Ethiopia or Sudan, Libya (Hebrew: Put) with modern-day Libya, Gomer is commonly associated with peoples of Anatolia or parts of Europe, and the house of Togarmah is generally linked to the region of Turkey or Armenia. Together with Gog, whom many Bible prophecy scholars identify as a future ruler of Russia, these nations will form a vast military alliance against Israel.

The coalition will attack the mountains of Israel, generally identified with the mountainous region of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), but God will supernaturally intervene and completely destroy the invading armies.
These verses reveal that multiple nations will unite against Israel in the last days. Despite the size and strength of this coalition, God will demonstrate His sovereign power by defending Israel, fulfilling one of the major prophecies that will precede the events of the end times.
« And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, »
In this verse, Gog reveals his plan to invade Israel. He views the land as an easy target, believing that its people are living in peace and security, without sufficient fortifications or defenses. Confident that nothing will stand in his way, he decides to launch his attack.

At that time, Israel will be experiencing a period of relative security, leading Gog and his coalition to believe that the nation can be conquered with ease. This verse demonstrates that Israel’s enemies will act with confidence, convinced that victory is certain. Yet their plan will fail because God Himself will protect His people and display His power before all the nations, proving that no army can stand against His sovereign will.
22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.
In these verses, God declares that He Himself will intervene to destroy the armies of Gog. Without the help of any human army, He will send supernatural judgments, including pestilence, bloodshed, torrential rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone, bringing the invading coalition to complete destruction.

This dramatic intervention will prepare the way for the prophetic events that follow in the last days.
