The Bible presents Gog as the leader of a great power coming from the north of Israel in the last days 👇
In chapters 38 and 39 of the Book of Ezekiel, Gog is described as the head of a vast military coalition that will rise against Israel before the rapture of the Church.
Gog is interpreted by some as representing modern-day Russia. This interpretation is based on several very specific biblical and geographical elements.
Ezekiel speaks of a people coming “from the far north” in relation to Israel. When looking at a map, the territory directly north of Israel corresponds to regions of present-day Russia.
The prophecy also mentions “Rosh,” “Meshech,” and “Tubal,” which many scholars historically associate with peoples who occupied territories connected to Russia and the former Soviet regions.
“Set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal…”
Ezekiel 38:2
“You will come from your place out of the far north…”
Ezekiel 38:15
“I will bring you from the far north…”
Ezekiel 39:2
According to this prophetic interpretation, Russia would become the principal leader of a military alliance directed against Israel in the last days.
The coalition described in Ezekiel would include several allied nations:
Persia → modern-day Iran
Persia is clearly identified in the Bible and corresponds to present-day Iran. Iran is currently one of Israel’s most outspoken enemies.
Cush → Ethiopia and parts of Sudan
This region represents African nations allied with the coalition.
Put → Libya and North Africa
Many interpretations associate this nation with modern North African territories.
Gomer and Togarmah → Turkey and neighboring regions
Many prophecy teachers connect these peoples with modern Turkey and nations near the Caucasus.
The Bible describes this coalition as a massive army coming to attack Israel at a time when the nation appears to be living in relative security.
“You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud covering the land.”
Ezekiel 38:16
According to several prophetic interpretations, this war could be triggered by political, religious, and strategic tensions surrounding Israel, Jerusalem, and the Middle East.
But the prophecy especially announces that God Himself will intervene supernaturally to stop this invasion.
Ezekiel speaks of:
1) massive earthquakes
2) great confusion among enemy armies
3) fire falling from heaven
4) sudden destruction
5) visible judgment before the nations
“I will execute judgment upon him with pestilence and bloodshed…”
Ezekiel 38:22
“I will magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the sight of many nations.”
Ezekiel 38:23
This major confrontation in the mountains of Israel is interpreted by some as occurring before the rapture of the Church.
Current geopolitical events involving Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Israel lead some believers to think that this biblical prophecy may be nearing fulfillment.
Will This War Happen Before the Rapture of the Church?
The Bible indicates that the war of Gog and Magog will occur before the rapture and before the great judgments of the end times 👇
The attack led by Russia and its allies against Israel will be one of the last major world events before the rapture of the Church.
Biblical prophecies announce that before the return of Jesus Christ, the world will experience rising international tensions, unusual military alliances, conflicts surrounding Israel, and increasing global instability.
The war of Gog and Magog appears to correspond precisely to this transitional period preceding the events described in the Book of Revelation.
Ezekiel describes a massive coalition led by Russia, accompanied by Iran, Turkey, Libya, and other nations, coming to attack Israel in the last days.
This attack will occur at a time when Israel is living in a certain apparent security, before the world fully enters the tribulation period ruled by the Antichrist.
“You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages… against a peaceful people who dwell safely.’”
Ezekiel 38:11
This war will prepare the global upheavals that will open the way for the future world government foretold in Revelation.
After this spectacular intervention of God against the enemy armies, the entire world will be deeply shaken:
1) nations will be filled with fear
2) political systems will be weakened
3) the Middle East will enter a major crisis
4) people will seek a leader capable of restoring peace and global order
It is in this context that the Antichrist will appear as a false savior capable of providing global solutions.
The Bible also announces that God Himself will intervene supernaturally during this war:
1) great earthquakes
2) confusion among the armies
3) judgments coming from heaven
4) sudden destruction of enemy forces
“There shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel.”
Ezekiel 38:19
“I will execute judgment upon him with pestilence, bloodshed, and flooding rain…”
Ezekiel 38:22
This divine intervention will strike the nations and spiritually and politically prepare the world for the next prophetic events.
The rapture of the Church will occur shortly after this war, before the most terrible judgments of the tribulation begin upon the earth.
Jesus warned that believers should discern the signs announcing His return.
“When you see all these things, know that the Son of Man is near, at the door.”
Matthew 24:33
“The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”
1 Thessalonians 5:2
“While people are saying, ‘Peace and safety!’ sudden destruction will come upon them.”
1 Thessalonians 5:3
Current tensions between Russia, Iran, Israel, and several Middle Eastern nations lead some believers to think that the prophecy announced in Ezekiel 38 and 39 could be fulfilled at any moment.
The Bible therefore calls everyone not to ignore the signs of the times, but to prepare spiritually, return to God, and remain ready for the imminent return of Jesus Christ.
Why Is Israel at the Center of This Prophecy?
The Bible shows that Israel occupies a central place in God’s prophetic plan for the last days 👇
From the Old Testament to the Book of Revelation, Israel and Jerusalem constantly appear at the heart of the prophetic events announced before the return of Jesus Christ.
God chose this land to fulfill His promises, reveal His name to the nations, and accomplish the major events of biblical history.
It is in Israel that:
1) God established His covenant with Abraham
2) the prophets spoke
3) Jesus Christ came into the world
4) Jesus was crucified and resurrected
5) and it is also in Jerusalem that the Bible announces His future return
“For all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.”
Genesis 13:15
“The Lord has chosen Jerusalem.”
Zechariah 3:2
The prophecy of Gog and Magog shows that Israel will become the center of a global confrontation in the last days.
Ezekiel first announces that Israel would be scattered among the nations and then return to its land before this prophetic war.
For nearly 2,000 years, the Jewish people were scattered throughout the world after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans. Yet, against all historical odds, Israel became a nation again in 1948.
This return of the Jewish people to their land is considered by many believers to be one of the greatest prophetic fulfillments announcing the end times.
“I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.”
Ezekiel 36:24
“After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many peoples.”
Ezekiel 38:8
The Bible also announces that Jerusalem will become a source of worldwide tension.
Even today, Israel stands at the center of political, military, and religious conflicts in the Middle East. Few nations in the world generate as much international debate, diplomatic tension, and spiritual opposition.
According to prophecy, the nations will eventually gather against Israel.
“Jerusalem shall become a burden to all peoples.”
Zechariah 12:3
“I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem.”
Zechariah 14:2
Many believers already see the beginnings of this global coalition in the growing alliances between Russia, Iran, Turkey, and certain nations hostile to Israel.
But this war will not concern politics or territory alone. The Bible also presents it as a spiritual confrontation.
Israel represents:
1) God’s chosen people in biblical history
2) the land of prophecy
3) the place of Jesus Christ’s future return
4) and a symbol of God’s plan for humanity
That is why biblical prophecy shows a continual spiritual opposition against Israel throughout history.
The Bible also states that nations will desire the country’s wealth, resources, and strategic position.
Today, Israel occupies an extremely important position in the Middle East militarily, economically, and technologically.
“You will come to take plunder and to carry away booty…”
Ezekiel 38:12
But above all, the prophecy announces that God Himself will intervene to defend Israel.
When the armies of Gog invade the land, God will strike the enemy nations with supernatural judgments:
1) earthquakes
2) military confusion
3) fire coming down from heaven
4) massive destruction
The ultimate purpose of this intervention will be to reveal God’s power before the whole world.
“I will magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the sight of many nations.”
Ezekiel 38:23
“The nations shall know that I am the Lord.”
Ezekiel 39:7
Israel is therefore at the center of prophecy because God will accomplish through this nation several major events preceding the return of Jesus Christ and the end times.
