For many people, the Bible can seem overwhelming at first. 👇
With its 66 books, thousands of verses, and many different characters, it can be difficult to know where to begin.
One of the most common mistakes is opening the Bible at random or trying to read it from Genesis to Revelation without understanding its structure.
For a beginner, the best starting point is usually the New Testament, especially the Gospels.
The Gospels tell about:
1) The birth of Jesus
2) His ministry
3) His miracles
4) His teachings
5) His death on the cross
6) His resurrection
The Gospel of John is often recommended because it clearly presents the identity of Jesus and the message of salvation.
“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”
John 20:31
After reading the Gospels, it is helpful to continue with:
1) The Book of Acts
2) Paul’s Epistles (Letters)
3) Psalms
4) Proverbs
Psalms teach prayer, worship, and trust in God.
Proverbs provide practical wisdom for daily living.
Over time, you can gradually explore the Old Testament and discover how all Scripture points to Jesus Christ.
It is also recommended to choose a clear and easy-to-understand Bible translation to encourage consistent reading.
The goal is not to read the entire Bible quickly, but to gradually understand what God wants to teach through His Word.
How Can You Understand What You Read in the Bible?
Understanding the Bible requires patience, prayer, and a good reading method. 👇
Many people stop reading the Bible because they encounter difficult passages or think they are unable to understand them.
Yet God desires His Word to be understood by all who sincerely seek Him.
Before you begin reading, take a few moments to ask God for understanding.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.”
James 1:5
A simple method is to ask yourself three questions:
1. What does this passage actually say?
1) Observe the text carefully.
2) Who is speaking?
3) To whom is it addressed?
4) What is the context?
5) What exactly is happening?
2. What does this passage teach me about God?
The Bible continually reveals God’s character:
1) His love
2) His justice
3) His patience
4) His power
5) His faithfulness
6) His holiness
Every passage helps us know Him better.
3. How can I apply this truth to my life?
The Bible is not merely a book of information.
It is intended to transform the way we think, speak, and act.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine.”
2 Timothy 3:16
It is also important to interpret verses within their context.
An isolated statement can sometimes be misunderstood if it is separated from the chapter or book in which it appears.
The more regularly you read the Bible, the more its different passages will begin to illuminate one another.
The Holy Spirit also plays an essential role in understanding Scripture.
Jesus promised:
“He will guide you into all truth.”
John 16:13
Over time, passages that once seemed difficult will become clearer and reveal their full meaning.
How Can You Make Bible Reading a Lasting Habit?
The key is not how much you read, but how consistently you read. 👇
Many people begin with enthusiasm but give up after a few days because they set unrealistic goals.
Spiritual growth is more like a daily journey than a sprint.
Even a few minutes of reading each day can gradually transform a life.
The Bible often compares God’s Word to spiritual food.
Just as the body needs regular nourishment, our faith needs to be fed by the Word of God.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4
To develop a lasting habit, several principles can help:
Choose a Specific Time
Reading at the same time each day helps build consistency.
For example:
1) In the morning before starting your day
2) During your lunch break
3) In the evening before going to sleep
Eliminate Distractions
A few minutes in a quiet place allow for better concentration and encourage meditation on God’s Word.
Take Notes
Writing down:
1) An important verse
2) A truth you discovered
3) A question to explore further
4) A prayer inspired by your reading
helps you remember what you learn.
Put It into Practice
True spiritual growth comes not only from reading but from obedience.
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
James 1:22
Persevere Even When You Feel Nothing
Some Bible readings may feel extraordinary. Others may seem ordinary.
Yet every moment spent in God’s Word gradually produces its effect.
The Bible promises that God uses His Word to transform the heart, renew the mind, and strengthen faith.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:105
Regular Bible reading is therefore more than a spiritual discipline. It is learning to know God personally, hear His voice, and walk more closely in His will each day.
