Matthew chapter 24 contains one of Jesus Christ’s most important prophetic teachings. Delivered on the Mount of Olives just days before His crucifixion, this message answers three essential questions asked by His disciples: When will the Temple be destroyed? What will be the sign of Your coming? And what will be the sign of the end of the age?
Jesus describes a sequence of prophetic events that will unfold before His visible return, including wars, famines, earthquakes, false messiahs, persecution, the Abomination of Desolation foretold by Daniel, the Great Tribulation, and finally His glorious return to establish His Kingdom.
Often called the Olivet Discourse, Matthew 24 builds upon the prophecies of Daniel and prepares readers to understand the Book of Revelation.

Matthew 24 contains Jesus Christ’s most detailed teaching about the events leading to His return and the end of the age👇
As Jesus was leaving the Temple in Jerusalem, His disciples asked Him:
“What will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
Matthew 24:3
In response, Jesus revealed a prophetic overview of the end times.
He spoke about:
1) false messiahs
2) wars and international conflicts
3) famines
4) earthquakes
5) persecution of believers
6) the worldwide preaching of the Gospel
7) the Abomination of Desolation
9) His glorious Second Coming.
These teachings form one of the most important foundations for understanding biblical prophecy concerning the end times.
Jesus explained that several signs would appear before His visible return👇
He made it clear that these events would not mean the end had already arrived, but that it was drawing near.
“All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
Matthew 24:8
Among these signs are:
1) increasing wars and conflicts
2) nation rising against nation
3) famines
4) earthquakes
5) pestilences
6) growing persecution of believers
7) false prophets
8) increasing lawlessness
9) the love of many growing cold
10) the Gospel being preached throughout the whole world.
Jesus compared these events to birth pains. Just as contractions become more frequent and intense before birth, these signs will increase as His return approaches.
Rather than creating fear, these signs are intended to encourage believers to remain watchful, faithful, and prepared for His coming.
The central message of Matthew 24 is a call to vigilance, faithfulness, and hope👇
Jesus reveals that the last days will be marked by deception, persecution, and unprecedented trials, but He also reminds His followers that God remains completely sovereign.
He explains that during the future Tribulation the Abomination of Desolation, foretold by the prophet Daniel, will mark a decisive turning point in God’s prophetic timeline.
After that period of unparalleled suffering, Jesus Christ will return visibly in power and glory.
“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven.”
Matthew 24:30
Jesus repeatedly warns His disciples not to be deceived by false christs or false prophets and not to lose hope when difficult times come.
He concludes His teaching with several parables emphasizing the importance of being spiritually ready, remaining faithful, and watching for His return.
Matthew 24 is therefore not a message of fear but a message of preparation.
It reminds believers that history is unfolding exactly as God foretold through the prophets, and that every event ultimately points to the glorious return of Jesus Christ, who will establish His everlasting Kingdom.

“And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”
In this prophecy, the disciples ask Jesus about the signs of His return and the end of the age. This verse introduces Jesus’ prophetic discourse concerning the events that will precede His glorious return and the establishment of His kingdom.
“All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
In this prophecy, Jesus explains that wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes are only the beginning of the end-time events. These signs mark the beginning of the period leading to the Tribulation and His glorious return.
“When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)”
In this prophecy, Jesus announces a major end-times event: the abomination of desolation, foretold by the prophet Daniel. According to many premillennial interpretations, this event marks the midpoint of the seven-year Tribulation, when the Antichrist will desecrate the temple and demand the worship that belongs to God alone
“For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”
In this prophetic passage, Jesus Christ announces a time of unprecedented suffering in world history, the Great Tribulation of the end times.
“And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
In this prophecy, Jesus announces His visible and glorious return at the end of the Tribulation. All the nations will see Him coming with power and great glory, fulfilling the prophecies concerning His Second Coming to judge the world and establish His kingdom.
