Revelation 10 Explained

Revelation 10 provides a pause between the sixth and the seventh trumpet. Before God's judgments continue, John sees a mighty angel coming down from heaven with an open little scroll in his hand. He also hears the voices of the seven thunders, but he is commanded not to write down what they have spoken.

This chapter reminds us that God reveals only what He chooses for His people to know about His plan. John is then instructed to eat the little scroll, symbolizing God's Word, before being sent to prophesy again concerning many peoples, nations, languages, and kings. Revelation 10 prepares the way for the events that unfold in the following chapters.

What Happens in Revelation 10?

John sees a mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud and with a rainbow above his head. His face shines like the sun, and his feet are like pillars of fire. In his hand is an open little scroll.

This vision emphasizes God's authority over all creation and declares that His plan is continuing exactly as He has determined.

The Mighty Angel Comes Down from Heaven

The Seven Thunders Speak

When the angel cries out with a loud voice, the seven thunders answer. John is about to write down what they have said, but a voice from heaven tells him to seal up their message and not record it.

This scene reminds us that God has not chosen to reveal every detail of His plan. Some things remain hidden until the time He has appointed.

God's Mystery Will Be Fulfilled

The angel raises his hand toward heaven and declares that there will be no more delay. When the seventh trumpet sounds, the mystery of God will be fulfilled, just as He announced through His servants the prophets.

This declaration shows that the events of the end times are approaching their fulfillment and that nothing can prevent God from accomplishing His plan.

John Eats the Little Scroll

John is told to take the little scroll and eat it. In his mouth it is sweet as honey, but in his stomach it becomes bitter. God then tells him that he must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.

This picture shows that receiving and proclaiming God's Word is both a joy and a responsibility, especially when it contains announcements of coming judgment.

Who is the mighty angel in Revelation 10?

Why was John told not to write the message of the seven thunders?

Why did John eat the little scroll?

The Bible does not reveal the identity of the mighty angel. He is presented as God's messenger, sent to announce that the mystery of God is about to be fulfilled. His majestic appearance highlights God's authority and the importance of the message he brings before the seventh trumpet.

Because God chose not to reveal that message. John was commanded to keep the words of the seven thunders secret, showing that some prophecies are revealed to humanity while others remain hidden until the time God has appointed.

John ate the little scroll because God wanted him to fully receive His message before proclaiming it. Sweet as honey, it represents the joy of receiving God's Word. Bitter in his stomach, it reminds us that God's Word also announces the judgments that are about to come upon the world.
