📖  Revelation 10:1-2

1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire.

2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth.

In this passage, John sees a mighty angel descending from heaven with impressive features: a cloud, a rainbow, a face like the sun, and feet like pillars of fire. These elements emphasize the majesty and authority of this heavenly messenger.

The angel holds a little book that is already open and places one foot on the sea and the other on the earth. This position symbolically shows the extent of the authority associated with the message he is about to deliver. The book is already open, indicating that its contents are about to be revealed.

This scene takes place during the first half of the seven-year Tribulation, within the sequence of events surrounding the trumpets. It prepares for the revelation that follows concerning the little book and John's prophetic role.

📖  Revelation 10:3-4

3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

In this passage, John hears the mighty cry of the angel, followed by the voices of the seven thunders. These thunders communicate a message that John understands, since he immediately prepares to write it down.

However, a voice from heaven commands him to seal up what the seven thunders have said and not write it down. The content of their message therefore remains deliberately hidden. God reveals certain things to John, but here He chooses not to communicate what the seven thunders have announced.

This scene highlights an important truth about prophecy: not everything God knows has been revealed to humanity. Even John, who was entrusted with many revelations, is commanded here to remain silent about what he has heard. This reminds us that God remains sovereign over what He chooses to reveal and what He keeps hidden.

📖  Revelation 10:5-7

5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

In this passage, the mighty angel raises his hand toward heaven and swears before God, the Creator of all things. His oath announces that there will be no more delay before God's prophetic plan reaches its appointed fulfillment.

Verse 7 is particularly important: when the seventh angel sounds his trumpet, the “mystery of God” will be fulfilled, according to what God has announced through His prophets. It therefore points to a decisive moment in the unfolding of biblical prophecy.

This declaration shows that the events announced by God will not be delayed indefinitely. His plan will unfold at the appointed time, and what He has revealed through the prophets will ultimately reach its fulfillment.

📖  Revelation 10:8-11

8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.

9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

In this passage, John is commanded to take the little book and eat it. It tastes sweet like honey in his mouth but becomes bitter in his stomach. This image represents the twofold nature of the prophetic message he receives and must proclaim.

The sweetness can represent the joy of receiving God's Word and revelation, while the bitterness reflects the terrible judgments that will come upon the earth. Knowing God's prophetic plan can therefore bring joy, while also causing deep sorrow when that plan includes judgment and suffering.

After eating the book, John receives a renewed mission: “Thou must prophesy again.” His prophetic ministry is not finished. He must continue to proclaim what concerns many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.

This passage shows that prophetic revelation is not simply about knowing future events. It also involves a responsibility: John must faithfully proclaim what God reveals to him, even when the message contains difficult events that are painful to announce.
