Chapter 13 of Revelation reveals the rise of the Antichrist and the False Prophet during the second half of the Tribulation. Following the events of Revelation 12, Satan gives his authority to the Beast, enabling him to establish a worldwide kingdom in open rebellion against God.
The Antichrist, represented by the first Beast, exercises political and military authority over the entire world. He blasphemes God, persecutes believers, and demands worship from all nations. The False Prophet, represented by the second Beast, performs great signs to deceive the inhabitants of the earth and leads them to worship the Antichrist as a god.
The False Prophet then enforces the mark of the Beast (666), without which no one can buy or sell. This mark becomes the sign of allegiance to the Antichrist’s kingdom and identifies those who choose to follow him rather than obey God. Believers who refuse the mark are severely persecuted.
This chapter portrays the height of Satan’s power on earth, yet his dominion is temporary and remains under God’s sovereign control. The Antichrist and the False Prophet will ultimately be defeated by Jesus Christ at His glorious return and will be cast alive into the lake of fire, as described in Revelation 19.
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
In this passage, John describes the Beast, identified as the Antichrist, who receives his power, authority, and kingdom from the dragon, that is, Satan. He will establish a worldwide political and religious rule, and the inhabitants of the earth will be astonished by his power.
The Antichrist will blaspheme God, demand the worship that belongs to God alone, and persecute those who remain faithful to Jesus Christ during the Great Tribulation. His authority will last for forty-two months, or three and a half years, corresponding to the second half of the Tribulation.
This passage reveals the climax of humanity’s rebellion against God. Although the Antichrist will appear to possess unrivaled global power, his authority is temporary and remains under God’s sovereign control. Those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life belong to Jesus Christ and will remain His, even in the face of persecution.
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
In this passage, John describes the second Beast, known as the False Prophet. He serves the Antichrist, using his authority to lead the inhabitants of the earth to worship the first Beast.
The False Prophet performs great signs and miracles, even calling fire down from heaven to deceive the nations. Through these miraculous works, he persuades the people of the earth to make an image of the Beast, which becomes the center of a worldwide system of worship. Those who refuse to worship the image are sentenced to death.
This passage reveals the extent of the religious deception that will characterize the Great Tribulation. The False Prophet will seek to turn humanity away from God by establishing a global system of worship centered on the Antichrist, bringing the world’s spiritual rebellion against the Lord to its highest point.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
In this passage, John describes the introduction of the mark of the Beast (666) by the False Prophet, acting on behalf of the Antichrist. This mark will be required of everyone, regardless of social status, and will become essential for participating in the world’s economic system.
Those who refuse to receive the mark will be unable to buy or sell and will be excluded from the global system established by the Antichrist. Receiving the mark will represent an act of allegiance to the Beast and a rejection of God’s authority.
The number 666 is identified as the number of the Beast. It is associated with the Antichrist and his kingdom. This passage warns of the spiritual deception of the last days and emphasizes the importance of remaining faithful to Jesus Christ, even in the face of intense pressure and persecution.
