« And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. »
In this verse, John hears an angel proclaim the fall of Babylon the Great. This announcement declares with certainty that the system represented by Babylon has been judged and that its destruction is inevitable.
Once powerful and influential, Babylon is now described as a dwelling place of demons and unclean spirits, revealing the depth of its spiritual corruption. Its outward wealth and influence cannot conceal its complete rebellion against God.
This verse shows that every system built on rebellion, idolatry, and the rejection of God will ultimately come to an end. The fall of Babylon the Great demonstrates that God’s justice will finally triumph over every form of corruption and deception.
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more.
In this passage, John describes the reaction of the kings and merchants of the earth to the sudden fall of Babylon the Great. Those who had benefited from her wealth, influence, and prosperity watch in horror as her destruction unfolds and realize that her judgment is final.
The rulers and merchants mourn, not because they have repented, but because they have lost the wealth, power, and prosperity that Babylon provided. Her destruction brings a dramatic collapse of the world’s political and economic system.
This passage emphasizes the sudden and irreversible nature of God’s judgment. What once appeared powerful and invincible is destroyed in a single moment, reminding us that the wealth and kingdoms of this world are temporary, while God’s justice endures forever.
Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
In this verse, John hears a call for heaven, the saints, the apostles, and the prophets to rejoice over the fall of Babylon the Great. This rejoicing is not because of destruction itself, but because God has carried out His perfect justice against a system that opposed Him and persecuted His people.
The judgment of Babylon brings an end to its deceptive influence over the nations. Those who have remained faithful to God now see His justice prevail and His promises fulfilled.
This verse reminds us that God never overlooks evil or forgets the suffering of those who belong to Him. In His perfect timing, He brings justice, vindicates His people, and faithfully accomplishes His righteous purposes.
« And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. »
In this verse, John sees a mighty angel perform a symbolic act by throwing a great millstone into the sea. This vivid image illustrates the sudden, complete, and irreversible destruction of Babylon the Great.
Just as the millstone sinks into the sea and disappears, Babylon will be destroyed forever. Its influence, power, and glory will come to an end in a single moment, and it will never rise again.
This verse emphasizes the finality of God’s judgment. What the world considered powerful and permanent will be brought to nothing. The fall of Babylon the Great demonstrates that every system opposed to God is destined to perish, while His kingdom alone endures forever.
