Revelation chapter 20 describes the events that immediately follow the glorious return of Jesus Christ. After the defeat of the Antichrist and the False Prophet, God establishes a new era known as the Millennium, during which Jesus Christ will reign over the earth for one thousand years.
During this reign, Satan will be bound so that he can no longer deceive the nations. The resurrected believers will reign with Christ, while the earth experiences an unprecedented period of peace, righteousness, and justice.
Revelation 20 also describes the final events of human history: Satan’s temporary release, his ultimate defeat, the Final Judgment before the Great White Throne, and the complete destruction of evil.
This chapter serves as the bridge between the events of the end times and the eternal state described in Revelation chapters 21 and 22.

Revelation 20 begins immediately after the glorious return of Jesus Christ described in the previous chapter.
An angel descends from heaven, seizes Satan, and binds him for one thousand years.
“He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.”
Revelation 20:2
During this time, Satan will no longer be able to deceive the nations.
The Bible presents this period as an age of peace, justice, and perfect government under the authority of Jesus Christ.
Those who share in the First Resurrection will reign with Him.
This period corresponds to the Millennial Kingdom foretold by the Old Testament prophets, including Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Zechariah.
According to the prophetic timeline presented on this website, this reign begins immediately after Christ’s return and the defeat of the Antichrist at Armageddon.
It fulfills God’s promises to Israel and establishes the visible reign of the Messiah over the entire earth..
At the end of the Millennium, Satan will be released for a short time.
“Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison.”
Revelation 20:7
Although he has been unable to deceive the nations throughout Christ’s reign, Satan immediately leads one final rebellion against God’s Kingdom.
Scripture refers to Gog and Magog as representing the nations gathered together in this final revolt.
The rebellion is short-lived.
God intervenes immediately.
Fire comes down from heaven and consumes the rebels.
Satan is then thrown forever into the Lake of Fire, where the Antichrist and the False Prophet have already been cast.
From that moment on, Satan will never again deceive humanity or oppose God’s plan.
God’s victory over evil will be complete and eternal.
Following the final rebellion, John witnesses one of the most solemn scenes in all of Scripture.
He sees a great white throne before which all the dead stand to be judged.
“Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it.”
Revelation 20:11
Books are opened.
Every person is judged according to his or her deeds.
Then another book is opened—the Book of Life.
Anyone whose name is not found written in the Book of Life is cast into the Lake of Fire.
Death and Hades themselves are also thrown into the Lake of Fire, bringing death itself to an end.
This judgment marks the final defeat of sin, death, and every form of rebellion against God.
After Revelation 20, the Bible turns to the eternal state.
Revelation chapters 21 and 22 describe the New Heaven, the New Earth, and the New Jerusalem, where God will dwell forever with His redeemed people.
Revelation 20 therefore serves as the final chapter of judgment before the beginning of eternity.

“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”
In this prophetic vision, John sees Satan bound and cast into the bottomless pit for one thousand years. During this time, he will no longer deceive the nations. This event marks the beginning of the Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ, during which the Lord will rule on the earth before Satan’s final rebellion and the Final Judgment.
“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”
In this prophetic vision, John describes the first resurrection and the beginning of the Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ. Faithful believers, especially those who refused to worship the beast during the Tribulation, are raised to life and reign with Christ for one thousand years. Those who share in the first resurrection are blessed, for the second death has no power over them.
“And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 👇
And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
In this prophetic vision, John describes the final rebellion after the thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ. After his release, Satan deceives the nations once again and gathers them for war against the saints, but God sends fire from heaven to destroy them. Satan is then cast into the lake of fire for eternal judgment.
“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 👇
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
In this prophetic vision, John describes the final judgment before the Great White Throne. All the dead stand before God to be judged. Those whose names are not found written in the Book of Life are cast into the lake of fire, which is called the second death.
