Revelation 9 Explained

Revelation 9 describes the judgments of the fifth and sixth trumpets, also known as the first and second "woes." After the judgments that struck creation in Revelation 8, these two trumpets directly affect humanity. John sees the Abyss opened, terrifying creatures emerge from it, and four angels released to lead a vast army.

This chapter shows that God's judgments become increasingly severe during the Tribulation. Despite these extraordinary events, most of humanity still refuses to repent, revealing the depth of its rebellion against God.

What Happens in Revelation 9?

When the fifth trumpet sounds, a star is given the key to the Abyss. Thick smoke rises from it, and creatures resembling locusts emerge to torment for five months those who do not have God's seal, but they are not allowed to kill them.

This judgment shows that God Himself sets the limits of their power. Even in the midst of His wrath, nothing escapes His authority.

The Abyss Is Opened

An Army from the Abyss

John describes these creatures as terrifying beings with extraordinary power. Their king is the angel of the Abyss, called Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek. This first woe reveals that the spiritual judgments are as terrifying as the natural disasters already seen.

Their appearance emphasizes their supernatural nature and reminds us that the forces of evil never act independently of God, but only within the limits He allows.

The Four Angels Are Released

At the sound of the sixth trumpet, four angels who have been bound near the great Euphrates River are released at the exact time appointed by God. They lead an army of two hundred million mounted troops, resulting in the death of one-third of humanity.

The scale of this judgment demonstrates that the events of the end times unfold according to God's perfect timetable and that nothing can prevent the fulfillment of His plan.

People Refuse to Repent

Despite these extraordinary judgments, the survivors continue to worship idols and refuse to turn away from their sins. They persist in murder, sorcery, sexual immorality, and theft.

This conclusion reveals the hardness of the human heart. Even when confronted with unprecedented judgments, many choose to reject God rather than repent.
