The Judgment of the Tribulation
In Revelation chapters 6–16, John describes the events that will take place during the Tribulation, a prophetic period of seven years which, will follow the Rapture of the Church. This period is marked by a series of increasingly severe divine judgments designed to demonstrate God’s justice upon a rebellious world while continuing to call people to repentance.
The Tribulation begins with the opening of the seven seals (Revelation 6). The first four seals introduce the famous Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, symbolizing conquest, war, famine, and unprecedented death. The following seals reveal the persecution of believers, dramatic cosmic disturbances, and the announcement of the coming Day of God’s wrath. Before the judgments intensify further, 144,000 servants of Israel are sealed by God for His protection. Many Bible teachers believe they will also play an important role in bearing witness during this period (Revelation 7).
The seven trumpets (Revelation 8–11) introduce a new series of judgments affecting the earth, the seas, the rivers, the heavenly bodies, and humanity. Despite these catastrophic events, many people still refuse to repent. During this period, God also raises up the Two Witnesses, who prophesy in Jerusalem for 1,260 days before being killed and then miraculously resurrected in the sight of the whole world.
Chapters 12–14 reveal the spiritual conflict taking place behind these events. Satan is cast down to the earth, where he works with great fury through the Antichrist (the Beast) and the False Prophet. The Antichrist demands the worship of the entire world, enforces the Mark of the Beast, and persecutes those who remain faithful to Jesus Christ. Despite this opposition, God continues to call people to repentance. Many Bible teachers believe that the 144,000 will participate in proclaiming God’s message during this time, while the Three Angels proclaim the everlasting gospel to the whole world and warn of the coming judgment.
Chapters 15 and 16 describe the seven bowls of God’s wrath, which are the final judgments of the Tribulation. These plagues strike the worshipers of the Beast with painful sores, turn the seas and rivers into blood, bring scorching heat, darkness, the drying up of the Euphrates River, and finally a massive earthquake accompanied by great hailstones. These judgments prepare the nations for the Battle of Armageddon, which reaches its climax at the glorious return of Jesus Christ in Revelation 19.
These chapters reveal that God remains sovereign throughout the Tribulation. His judgments are perfectly just, yet even in the midst of His wrath, He continues to give people the opportunity to repent before His final judgment is fully carried out. They reveal both the seriousness of sin, the holiness of God, and His mercy toward all who choose to place their faith in Jesus Christ.
This period concludes with the visible return of Jesus Christ, the defeat of the Antichrist and the False Prophet, Christ’s victory at Armageddon, and the establishment of His Millennial Kingdom on earth.
